Content grading for SEO and AI search visibility

Last updated August 19, 2026
The take

The most trusted content grader in SEO, now watching whether ChatGPT mentions your brand too. Worth it for teams that publish enough to need a shared editorial standard.

Great for

Content teams with 3+ writers who need a single, legible grade that tells every writer and editor whether a draft is ready to publish.

The catch

It grades the page you already decided to write. No rank tracking, no backlinks, no crawl. You still need Ahrefs or Semrush next to it, and the credit limits punish experimentation.

Bottom line

Reach for it when editorial quality at scale is the bottleneck and you have the budget for a second tool next to it. Skip it if you need one platform that covers the whole SEO job.

What you're actually getting

Clearscope is a content grader with a letter score. You enter a keyword, it analyzes the top-ranking pages, and it tells you which terms to include, how long your content should be, and whether your draft measures up. The grade runs A++ to F, and it updates live as you write.

The 2026 platform adds a second layer: Prompt Tracking. It watches specific prompts across ChatGPT and Gemini to tell you when and how your brand gets mentioned in AI-generated answers, plus which web searches those models triggered to build their responses.

The product spans five areas: topic exploration, AI drafting, the content editor with live grading, a content inventory that monitors published pages, and prompt tracking. Every plan includes unlimited users and projects. The integrations that matter are Google Docs, WordPress, Microsoft Word, and Google Search Console.

One thing I really like about Clearscope is how it makes content optimization feel so straightforward. When I'm writing articles or landing pages, the recommendations for keywords and relevance help me understand what I should focus on. The interface is clean and the keyword suggestions are usually very relevant. It helps me improve content quality without guessing.

Where it earns its keep

It shines when you have multiple writers producing content and no shared standard for what optimized actually means. The letter grade gives editors a single bar: hit an A, ship it. IBM famously enforces an A+ minimum before publishing, and the grade has become the de facto editorial standard in SaaS content ops.

The Google Docs integration is the workflow win. Writers see the grade and term suggestions in a sidebar as they type, no tab-switching, no copy-paste. That friction reduction is the reason teams stick with it after the trial.

The newer Prompt Tracking feature addresses a real gap. Most content tools are still calibrated entirely around traditional SERP signals. Clearscope's move to surface where and how a brand appears in ChatGPT and Gemini answers is genuinely useful for teams that need to justify content investment in an AI-search world.

Where it'll bite you

Scope is the honest trap. Clearscope grades the page you already decided to write. It never tells you which page to write, update, or fix first. There is no rank tracking, no backlink index, no site crawl, and the keyword research is thin enough that reviewers call it basic. You will run Ahrefs or Semrush next to it, and that second subscription is part of the real cost.

The credit system punishes experimentation. Every report costs a credit, and overages bill automatically. Test three keyword variations for one article and you burned three reports before publishing anything. The Essentials plan gives you 50 pages a month, which sounds fine until you realize a single content refresh audit can eat a chunk of that in one session.

The grade can be gamed. Reviewers note you can stuff suggested terms into mediocre prose and hit an A++ that means nothing. The grade is a completeness check, not a quality score. Treat it as the goal and it will make your writing worse. Use it as a directional signal and it is genuinely useful.

The part that could be better is the pricing structure. For smaller teams or occasional users, the cost feels a bit high considering the number of credits or reports included. Sometimes I also wish the platform gave more detailed explanation around why certain recommendations are made, a bit more context would help.

What it costs, really

Essentials runs $129/month for 50 tracked prompts, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations, and 20 drafts. Business jumps to $399/month for 300 tracked prompts, 300 pages, 50 explorations, and 20 drafts, plus a dedicated account manager. Enterprise is custom.

Your real bill includes overages. Extra pages cost $25/month per block on Essentials and $15/month on Business. Extra drafts cost $50 on Essentials and $20 on Business. A team producing 30 articles a month on Essentials can easily burn through the base limits and end up closer to $200-250/month. There is no annual discount advertised and no free tier, just a 14-day trial. The unlimited-user model helps the math for teams but does nothing for solo operators.
